What is a Gooseberry?

July 22nd, 2012 |

Hi everyone! Hope you all are doing well. :) I, except for my sunburn, am doing great! I arrived home Friday night just after 11 from my camping trip up north with Jake. We didn’t want to come back home – we had so much fun! Feel free to click on the image above to see some pictures I took!

After stopping to buy groceries on Tuesday morning, we started the 2 hour or so drive up. Needless to say, the drive isn’t very exciting (is it ever?). We arrived to Gooseberry Falls State Park just passed Two Harbors and checked into our campsite. After wrestling the tent up and getting the air mattress full, we went for a hike around the park. Lucky for us, our campsite was only about ΒΌ mile from the lake! It was a quick little hike down to the shore, at which point we walked along to Gooseberry River. We went swimming for a while before heading back to our campsite. We drove into Two Harbors to pick up a few items we’d forgotten to bring, and had dinner at Black Woods Cafe. Once the sun had set, we walked down to the rocky shore and stared at the stars. You’ve never seen stars unless you’ve seen them on the North Shore. We saw some fireflies too!

On Wednesday, we headed up the Gunflint Trail in Grand Marais. We went all the way to the end, and looked into doing horseback riding and zip lining. Neither one of those worked out :( Fortunately, on our way back down the trail we found an outfitters shop that rented out kayaks. We ended up doing an impromptu kayak trip! We kayaked for 4 hours on Seagull Lake, which is in the Boundary Waters and 5 miles from the Canadian border! :) We found a neat little island with a small campsite and had lunch. Since it was unplanned, we didn’t have any sunscreen. I got burnt to a crisp! D; After we got ashore, we drove back to our site. We made dinner on the grill – it was so good, however stressful it was being so dark and late.

Thursday was our 4 year anniversary. We didn’t do much, we tried to keep our day relaxing. We ate lunch up on Palisade Head. Such a gorgeous view! We did a little bit of hiking along Gooseberry River, did a little bit of swimming again. While hiking, I asked Jake what a gooseberry was. Every time we saw berries, he said, “That’s a gooseberry!” He said this about 4 times, so we really didn’t know. Here’s one image I found on Stock Exchange.

That night, we made a dinner of steaks, baked potatoes and corn on the cob! We, of course, had the camping staple of s’mores. We didn’t do as much on Friday as we did the other days. We went to see Jake’s grandpa, who was dying :( We went and saw The Dark Knight Rises. I felt so-so about the movie — I didn’t know a whole lot of the back story I suppose :/ We drove back to the cities and our trip was done. It was a lot of fun and I’m excited for another trip we can take.

On a side note, I’m finishing Doctor Who season one right now. Has anyone watched it? I’m hooked now! That was all I had to update on for now. Keep an eye out for additions to my resources, I’ll be adding some stock photos and brushes in the next fews days. :)
